              - Die silberne Kirche auf schwarzem Grund ist dem alten Gelsenkirchener Stadtwappen entnommen.
 
              - Die bewurzelte grüne Linde entstammt dem alten Buerschen Stadtwappen.
 
              - Der rote Horster Löwe über fünf blauen Querbalken auf silbernem Grund schmückte bereits das alte Familienwappen der Herren von der Horst.
 
              - Die silbernen Berghämmer auf schwarzem Grund deuten darauf hin, dass der Bergbau die wirtschaftliche Grundlage für die Stadtwerdung Gelsenkirchens bildete.
